Harassment is one of the most common charges in Colorado, and probably the most common crime against a person - but it's also kind of a catch-all charge. Hit, kick, or shove someone? Harassment. Call someone repeatedly at an inconvenient time? Harassment. Say some really nasty things to someone? That may also be harassment.
It can range from a petty offense with a maximum of 10 days in jail, to a 1st-degree misdemeanor, up to 364 days in jail, depending on the exact circumstances, with fines ranging from $300 to $1000.
This is also one of the types of charges most often "enhanced" with domestic violence.
But in some cases, it may be at odds with a person's First Amendment right to free speech, an individual's right to self-defense, or other considerations. You may have a defense to these charges at trial.
