Though not technically a crime in itself, domestic violence is a charge "enhancement" that can turn even minor crimes into considerably more problematic charges if the alleged victim is or has been in a romantic or sexual relationship with the charged individual. Even a petty property offense, such as criminal mischief, can be "enhanced" if the alleged victim is a spouse or romantic partner, leading to lifelong restrictions.

For example, having a conviction enhanced with domestic violence can affect future job prospects, Second Amendment rights, and outcomes in family court. And, most importantly, a prosecutor cannot, by law, agree to remove a domestic violence enhancement as part of a plea deal.
